Get to Know Your Angry Neighborhood Protesters!!!

My Fellow HuffPovians,

As the town hall health care debates rage on across the country, I fear that I am too focused on the photos of angry folks. I bet some of you are as well. The negative imagery is affecting my duty, as an engaged citizen, to try and understand the message the enraged dissenters aim to get across.

President Obama will be attending a town hall meeting in my home state of Montana on Friday, and I'm sure in typical MSM fashion, pictures will be taken of the fuming protesters without getting to know what's got them so gosh darned fired up.

9 Ways for Red Sox Parents to Explain David Ortiz and His PEDs

It's been a sad week in Red Son Nation...Boo freaking Hoo. You're going to the playoffs, but so sad, one of your beloved stars used steroids. Cry me a river made from the tears of middle-aged men who are "heartbroken" over David Ortiz. Suck it up, it could be worse.

Try rooting for the Mets.

As always, you are my sunshine Arianna.

This morning a tragic story appeared to me via the magic of the Facebook wall.

It seems a dedicated Boston father took his 10-year-old daughter to Fenway Park yesterday, where her favorite player hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh that would prove to be the game winner.

The young fan's Red Sox hero? David "Big Papi" Ortiz.

In Which I Extend An Olive Branch to White Supremacists

2009-06-19-happyhitler.jpg
I was recently listening to a Fresh Air interview with Chip Berlet,a senior analyst for the independent think tank Political Research Associates (PRA) who has spent 25 years tracking extremist hate groups. I was taken aback when Bertlet told Terry Gross "there have been nine murders since the inauguration connected to the White Supremacy conspiracy theories."

The Holocaust Museum killing, the Pittsburgh police murders and the shooting of Dr. Tiller were front-page news, but I was unaware of the ugly events in Brockton and along the Arizonan border. (A nine-year-old girl? Good Lord.) Couple Bertlet's report "Toxic to Democracy" with the Department of Homeland Security's April release on the rise of right-wing extremism, and it appears to be heady times for violent white supremacists.

Coincidentally, I found out that, I too, had been the discussion amongst the Hitler-loving crowd.

I've decided to do something about it.

18 Rounds of Soggy & Sunny Days at the U.S. Open

Here's a rather wordy riff I wrote on the two days I spent out on Long Island at the U.S. Open.

Don't worry, though, it's broken down into "18 rounds," in a 100% hackneyed writerly gimmick.

I had a hell of a time in the muck. Thanks to Deadspin for taking notice, and to HuffPo's New York page for giving me a tangential link to hang my visor on.

Fore!

I've been writing about cars for awhile, and it has its perks. Mainly, getting to test drive dream rides, but also the occasional chance to attend auto-sponsored events. As a guest of Lexus (Stylish vehicles! Good gas mileage! Liquid assets!), I went to the U.S. Open at Bethpage on Saturday, hospitality tent pass in hand. The weather was brutal, but it worked out for the best, at least for one person.

Me.
